چکیده
In this report we have shown that nitrite can be oxidized via a dehydrogenation. It seems likely that the nitrite molecule (or some activated form of it) is hydrated prior to electron removal. Summary.-In the chemoautotroph Nitrobacter agilis, the oxygen of water is responsible for the oxidation of nitrite. This process is independent of molecular oxygen. These results constitute the first experimental demonstration that water serves as the source of oxygen in chemoautotrophic bacteria.

Alterations in Polyribosomes during Erythroid Cell Maturation
This communication presents a morphological study of the changes in ribosome content and organization which occur during the maturation of erythroid cells of the phenylhydrazine-treated rabbit. Electron micrographs of thin sectioned nucleated and non-nucleated erythroid cells have been subjected to a quantitative analysis of the distribution of ribosomes as polyribosomes of various sizes and as...
متن کاملRNase activity in erythroid cell lysates.
The characteristics of degradation of reticulocyte ribonucleic acid (RNA) and ribosomes were studied in a whole erythroid cell lysate system. The process followed Michaelis-Menten kinetics, and indicated that RNA degradation in the erythroid cell is mediated by an enzyme previously isolated from reticulocyte hemolysates. Erythroid cell RNase activity had a temperature optimum of 50 degrees C, a...
متن کاملSynthesis of Ribonucleic Acid in Rabbit Blood Cells in Vivo.
Erythroid cells constitute a model particularly suitable for study of the relationship between cell maturation and nucleic acid and protein synthesis. Circulating reticulocytes, nonnucleated cells capable of prolonged protein synthesis, are derived from cells in the bone marrow that proceed from an apparently multipotential nucleated stem cell through various stages of increasingly mature or di...
متن کاملBiosynthesis of reticulocyte membrane proteins by membrane-free polyribosomes.
Intact rabbit reticulocyte cells synthesize two predominant species of membrane polypeptides; at least 10 reticulocyte membrane polypeptide species are not produced by the cells. Cell-free extracts of reticulocytes, free of any membranes or membrane-bound polyribosomes, synthesize large amounts of these two membrane polypeptides; one of these polypeptides appears to be modified, probably by los...
متن کاملEffects of low concentrations of benzene on mouse hematopoietic cells in vivo: a preliminary report.
Evaluation of benzene-induced hematotoxicity following exposure to low concentration is important for understanding mechanisms of toxicity and determining the dose response at benzene levels close to the current occupational exposure limit (1 ppm). Male B6C3F1 mice were exposed to 0, 1, 10, 100, or 200 ppm benzene by inhalation for 6 hr/day, 5 days/week, for 1, 2, 4, or 8 weeks. At each samplin...
